Neck & Shoulder Pain
How to Cope With Neck and Shoulder Pain
Pains in the neck and shoulders are extremely common—and extremely uncomfortable. The neck and shoulders contain numerous muscles, bones, nerves, arteries, and veins, as well as ligaments and other supporting structures. Some of the most common conditions that cause should and neck pain include:
- Injury to the soft tissues (including whiplash as well as other trauma and sports injuries)
- Degenerative arthritis of the cervical spine which can pinch nerves, causing both neck and shoulder pain
- Degenerative disk disease in the neck—or cervical spondylosis—can cause localized neck pain
- Abnormal conditions involving the spinal cord, heart, and lungs may cause neck and shoulder pain
Basic Care Measures:
There are steps you can take to help alleviate the pain of minor injuries. (Be sure to contact your doctor before initiating any self-treatment).
- Rest the injured area for the first few days
- Ice the injured area for 15 – 20 minutes every hour. (Applying ice directly to the skin can be damaging, so first place it in a plastic bag, then wrap in a towel before application.)
- Elevate the injured area, which helps reduce swelling and pain, using pillows if necessary.
- Apply Topricin pain relief and healing cream as soon as possible following the injury, at night, in the morning, and as needed throughout the day.
